Electric VehiclesSource: Smart Energy Portal Electric Vehicles: Cool Technology but Not So Good For a Warming Planet Earth?I like electric cars. Several of my friends, including a next-door neighbor, have hybrid plug-ins (HPEV). They’re quiet, stylish and don’t give off a bad smell of catalyzed sulfur under hard acceleration. The start-up torque of the induction motors even brings to mind fond memories of the muscle cars of my youth (almost).
The Chinese auto bubble threatBy Chris Isidore, CNN Money, January 12, 2011
DETROIT (CNNMoney) -- More cars were sold in China last year than in any other country at any time in history. And industry officials only expect those sales to grow. But the rush to build more cars in China to feed that growing market could soon become a big problem.
Study: If aliens exist, they probably want to destroy usBy Mike Wall, The Christian Science Monitor, January 10, 2011 When considering the prospect of alien life, humankind should prepare for the worst, according to a new study: Either we're alone, or any aliens out there are acquisitive and resource-hungry, just like us. These two unpalatable options are pretty much the only possibilities, according to the new study. That's because evolution is predictable, and alien biospheres should thus produce intelligent creatures much like us, with technological prowess and an ever-increasing need for resources.
Shipping To Suffer Despite Record Trade In Iron Ore And Coal, With 35 Miles Of Ships Coming Out Of Shipyards In 2011By Agustino Fontevecchia, Forbes, Jan. 10 2011 Bad news continues to mount for the shipping industry. After seeing the Baltic Dry Index drop steadily since the end of October 2010, a survey by Bloomberg showed that with approximately 200 capesizes, or cargo ships spanning more than 1,000 feet, coming out of the shipyards this year, a surplus in vessels will lead to a glut that will produce additional pain to shipping companies.

Officials and industry executives in Berlin and Washington warned of severe repercussions from a scarcity of the minerals with magnetic, luminescent and other properties which go into products such as hybrid cars, solar panels and windmills.
Branson dedicates spaceport runway in US desertBy Susan Montoya Bryan, Associated Press, 23 October 2010 The dream of rocketing tourists into space edged closer to reality yesterday, as the world's first commercial spaceport opened a runway in the New Mexico desert. All that is left for Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic company, which will operate the flights, is more rocket testing on SpaceShipTwo and sending it into space. The British billionaire said he expects flights for space tourists to begin in nine to 18 months, and he will be among the first passengers. "Today is very personal, as our dream becomes more real," Branson said. "People are beginning to believe now."
