The ingenious compressed air technology by MDI/Tata Motors for propelling cars is probably one of the most likely to succeed alternatives when fossil-based transportation becomes unaffordable.  Unlike the other alternative technologies such as fuel cells, high-capacity batteries, and solar energy, compressed air technology is already available and commercially viable.
